Power CMY blends the artist’s personal experiences with experimental editing to charts her exploration of race and identity. The film is divided into three parts, each centered around the theme of power. Cyan is about losing power and strength. It describes a moment when the artist was the only person of color in the room and felt the need to behave in a certain way. She says “I can be myself later… somewhere else… but not here.” Magenta is about the artist searching for her source of power. She looks to her ancestors and her hometown for strength, saying “I think about how this place shaped me, how it continues to shape me.” The final segment, Yellow, is about the artist regaining her power. She returns to the family tradition of drumming, passed down to her by her mother, as a way to both fully express herself and connect to the power of her lineage. “The drum shields me from other people‘s gaze. It pulls me out of my mind… and every thought is firmly rooted in my body.” Power CMY presents the artist’s ongoing journey of learning to embrace the multiple parts of herself that make her whole.
